Do You Want to Draw People

How to Draw PeopleDo you want to draw people? Drawing people is a fascinating art form. To be very frank drawing people is not an easy task because we see people all around. And we have a clear idea of what human beings look like. Because of that your work is always compared with real life people.

Also keep in mind that drawing a humanoid form is not all about people drawing. Your drawing needs to have a personality. Otherwise your work will look lifeless. So the challenge is twofold here one: you need to be an expert of humanoid form drawing in all its glory. Secondly you need to have ability and skill set to infuse personality in the form.

Does it sound like a lot of work? You better believe it is. Accepting that it's hard work at the outset will help you to decide if at all you'd want to invest your time and energy for acquiring people drawing skill.

But before you decide let me add some points here to help you to make your mind. Know that your people drawing skill can really be very lucrative and truly rewarding career for you. Because, there are many industries which are starving for skilled people drawing artists. Comic book industries, TV cartoon shows, cartoons cinema industry all require strong cartoon drawing and people drawing skills. And they're ready with bags of money to buy work of good artists.

If you do not want to make money from your art even then drawing people can be really rewarding in terms of your own satisfaction.

With this background I would give you some suggestions that will help you in both the dimensions of this art that is creating form and infusing personality in the form.

Invest in a basic book of human anatomy for artists. Read the book from cover to cover at least three times paying special attention to the given figure drawings. And practice copying the figures in your drawing pad.

Train yourself to look around and start learning from people around you. There are people of many forms, shapes and sizes. Just try to mentally note down everything. By doing this you will be enhancing your sub-conscious knowledge of human shapes.

Apart from these pay attention to the details. And believe me there are many things that you need to concentrate upon. Most importantly learn to draw face, hands and feet/shoe well.

When it comes to adding personality to your work, you should keep in mind, our brains can never remain idle, it is always processing something even the body remain stationary. So if you're your character is in motion then just drawing the motion and action faithfully will add life to them.

But if your character is not doing any gross physical action like running or fighting then you have to use their body language and face gestures to convey what is going on in their mind.

If you ignore this aspect of people drawing your work will look flat and fail to grab attention of the viewers.
