Learning to Draw Flowers

Drawing is the basic foundation when learning art. Drawing is the first thing that they teach in an art class, because without it, one can never get a proper idea how to fill in paint. It is especially difficult for children to start painting without learning drawing. Drawing classes for kids teach them to draw, because while drawing, children can analyze and observe the shapes and forms, which help them in drawing. Only when they can keenly observe the details, they can get an idea how to draw that particular shape.

One thing that is very interesting for kids to learn to draw and paint are the flowers. Children love the vibrant colours of the flowers, and it is easier for them to learn to draw flowers. We have often seen young children finish off a flower with a few scribbles and fill it in with colours using their color pencils or markers. In drawing classes for kids, however, they teach the children more than just a few scribbles. They will teach them how to draw realistic drawing and also do realistic painting. It is very necessary to bring out the realistic aspect in life drawing. It also takes a lot of training to get the proper perspective, shading, light effects, texture, etc.

Flowers are made up of overlapping layers and hence they have many edges. Usually when amateurs draw a flower, these edges end up looking like outlines and they lack the reality aspect to it. When these edges are made to look realistic, only then the image of the flower gets a real look.


The first stage in drawing flowers is the preliminary sketch, which is made up of lines. These lines are going to be the main foundation on which the further filling rests. While kids learn to draw these preliminary lines, they should be able to realize that these are not just mere outlines, but they are the boundaries which give the petals an overlapped look. It is very important to turn these lines into edges. Edges can be broad or narrow. How will the children analyze to know the edges and whether they are broad or narrow?

 The first thing that the children are taught is to analyse the flower and learn where the light is falling and where the shadows are formed. Next is to identify the surfaces that are dark and light. The darkness of the line in the sketch should be observed for, and check for the area of darkness the line belongs to. Whether it is a part of the shadow below the surface or above the surface should be identified, and then the darkness of that line should be merged to that area. If the surface that is being drawn is darker than the background, then the darkness of the line should be merged into that surface.
Once they practice, children will start to analyse all the edges of the flowers and will be able to conclude if the edges are dark over light or light over dark. Then they can merge the darkness of the line to whichever surface it belongs. It will then no more be an outline but an edge. This will give a 3D effect to the flower and it starts to look more real and different from a regular 2D drawing.
The edge of a single flower petal can vary from dark to light from one particular area to light to dark in another area. It is very tricky to learn it and hence children need to observe closely to analyze the dark and light effects.

Practice makes a man perfect, and in this case it is very true that if the children keep practicing, they will soon attain perfection in it.
