How To Draw Faces – Basic Steps and Tips

Drawing realistic faces is quite hard, especially if you will draw faces in different angles or positions. It can be complicated at first, but once you know to draw faces or you know how to apply patterns, then everything will be easier and faster for you. For now, let's focus on how to draw a simple realistic face using simple tips and steps that you can follow. Anyway here are some steps and tips on how to draw faces:

1. Draw an oval. This oval will be the face or the head's pattern


2. Then draw a vertical line on the middle of the circle, make sure that it will divide the oval in half. This line will help you balance or center the face details like nose and lips.


3. After drawing the vertical line, draw a horizontal line on the middle of the oval. Make sure it will divide the oval in half. This line will be your guide for the eyes.


4. Then draw another horizontal line at the middle of the lower half of the oval which is from the first horizontal line to the chin. This line will be your guide for the nose so try to make the line a bit shorter.


5. Draw another horizontal line right after the second horizontal line that you draw. This line will be your guide for the character's lips.


6. You face pattern is almost complete. At the bottom of the oval, draw two vertical lines for the neck.


7. Then try to make a box or a block in your pattern. Make sure to leave a little space of the upper oval. The upper line of the box will be the hairline and the lower lines will be the jaw. So make sure to balance your pattern first before you put the face details.


8. The block that you drawn will also help you shade or color your drawing.


9. Your face pattern is now complete. It's time to add the face details like eyes, nose, lips and hair.

Drawing face details can be really hard at first, you can draw or copy some images on the Internet first, so that you will have the ideas on how to draw realistic eyes, nose and lips.
