A Guide on How to Sketch

A Guide on How to SketchTo begin, a guide on how to sketch should demonstrate a good understanding of the challenges that sketch artists face.

As in almost any business you come across, some frequently asked questions will emerge with time. The question is, has the author taken the time to flesh out these FAQs? And has the author taken the time to sit down and really think about the answers before offering them to the reader?

This fundamental understanding of the challenges form the basic framework for any good sketching guide. But even with this framework, the reader needs to know if the author is able to answer the questions accurately and provide sound solutions that work.

For example, many members on my site has found drawing portraits difficult. This can be further broken down to the different features on a face. Some find drawing noses tough, while others find drawing lips tricky. I've also realized that many artists have a problem with getting proportions right.

They have this image they want to draw in their mind but when they put it down on paper, it somehow turns out wrong. So how do we begin to address this?

Defining the problem accurately is only the first step. Now the solutions need to be presented clearly. For instance, to solve the problem of getting proportions right, one should have a system for measurement.

Measurement is everything in proportions. Artists get proportions wrong because as human beings, we don't always draw what we see. Try drawing a circle and you'll know what I mean. To make things worse, our sense of relativity is also inaccurate. In other words, when we draw something that's in relation to something else, we almost always get the measurements wrong. The trick to overcome this is not to place too much trust on our freehand abilities and depend on a system for accurate measurements.

If you can establish that the author of the sketching guide has been able to state the challenges and solutions clearly, you know you're in for a treat.
