Learn the Intricacies of Fine Art Using a Pencil

Learn the Intricacies of Fine Art Using a Pencil
Pencil is first a drawing instrument and then a writing one.

You might think that what is the fuss about drawing and writing; the fact is – pens are considered to be writing instruments more than they are considered as sketching ones.

The difference lies in the ink. Pens use ink and technically they are more suited to write stuff because they cannot be erased as such. Whereas when using a pencil, they are still today used as drawing instruments and using even for rough work.

To ‘B' or Not to ‘B'!

Pencils are segregated based on their lead characteristic. That is whether the lead is dark in shade, or is stronger and finer. Mechanical pencils with a virtually endless sharp tip use HB; for that matter the ‘general' pencil (not used for drawing) use a HB lead. Artists use numbered-B pencils for drawing. The lead type ranging till even 12B! The shades, depth and characteristics of the lead are related with the number and the ‘B'. Artists into advanced drawing even use charcoal for instance. Charcoal is used to bring a ‘black and white' effect into the drawing and to have the darkest blacks in a sketch. There are artists who use a complete black shade rather than gradually merging shadows in the drawing. Therefore to ‘B' or not to ‘B' is dependent on the artist!

Drawing using Pencil: Shades of Grey

A sketch is all about confident strokes. Wavering or shaky strokes won't ever do justice to your drawing especially if you're into fine arts. It is a different matter altogether if you use wavy/shaky lines that are relevant to your sketch. Drawing tutorials can now be thankfully accessed over the internet. The internet is a vast arena of useful information today. And with social networking gaining prominence, sharing useful information has only received a tremendous impetus from the socially active people. Experts are now more willing to spread their knowledge rather than keeping their secrets to the confines of art galleries. The internet has become the new art gallery.

The advantage with pencil drawing is that you can use the dexterity of your hands in a way that brings out the best in your pictures (and we seem to have a knack towards black and white sketches)! It evokes a certain nostalgia that coloured paintings cannot. It is the expression of the dual coloured nature of human beings that cannot think of a third alternative to his black and white world – that is the power of the pencil!

Be it advertising or marketing of sketches (or even paintings), the internet has become an ideal platform for that. A search with a simple ‘Learn how to draw' – evokes so many websites that it is practically difficult to decide from the best of the lot. Information is so freely available on the internet that we really find it difficult to think beyond the same, even if it is learning how to draw!

Tips For Artists - How To Draw The Human Figure

Tips For Artists - How To Draw The Human Figure
When an artist comes to drawing a human figure the challenge they comes across is to try and see the whole figure as it's own shape. This is because our experience from looking at our bodies in the past tells us that the human figure is made up of various parts, we need to scrap this thinking and start looking at the whole body as one form.

For example we might enjoy taking the time to draw the eyes of a subject, but we might not be so interested in drawing the hair of the subject. If we choose to draw in this fashion the end result will not look congruent because parts of the picture will be delivered with less effort. So, how do we get away from this drawing style?

What you need to do is treat your subject like they are made up of various forms and forget that they are a living and breathing person. When you take this step back from your subject and look at it in this light, it will be really surprising how much less importance you place on the individual details. This will make your drawings more congruent.

You are just getting started so do not worry too much about getting your drawing perfect, they might not look like the subject at this stage but with some practice you will start to get the hang of it and develop your own style in the way you work. If you have redrawn your sketch of form so many times that you are unable to see what the drawing is anymore, that is ok. It is much better to learn this way rather than producing a drawing that was sketched once but has been poorly observed and is out of proportion.

What really matters is what YOU learn as you attempt more drawings, if you take this one bit of knowledge from this article then you will develop as an artist more quickly and build up a portfolio of great drawings in no time.

To get better at drawing the form of a figure it is good practice to set yourself a short time frame to draw the figure quickly. It is recommended by teachers of art to make rapid drawings with a short time limit. Set yourself a limit of 15 minutes, 10 minutes and even 5 minutes for each sketch. Concentrate on getting the form of the subject.

When you begin drawing you should look for a overall shape that will contain most of your subject. For example your subject might make the form of a square so draw a square or a rectangle that will fit around your subject. Doing this will make it much easier for you to fill in the form of the subject. After exploring the main shape of your subject you will find you have made it much easier for yourself to draw the figure while not paying too much attention to the individual parts of the subject.

Tips for Drawing Realistic People

Tips for Drawing Realistic People
Observe Your Surroundings
Learn to watch people and things around you in detail. For instance, watch the way someone's shirt moves when they walk. Look at the facial expressions of people during different situations. Also, observe the way drapes flap in an open window, or light falls onto a tree. You want to learn from real life situations to get the understanding you need to draw realistic people.

Start With The Nude
The first step is to start studying and drawing the figure nude. You will not be able to draw clothed people until you get the basis of the nude figure. You can find a local class with models or find an online website with pictures of models for drawing.

Proportions
An average person's height is 7 and a half heads tall, this is for a more realistic drawing. The ideal figure is 8 head tall which is what you will be using for most of your figures. Although, some figures height is 9 heads which is for mostly superheroes.

Set A Goal For Your Drawing
Think about what you are about to draw before you actually draw. Ask yourself these questions before drawing:
  • What is the theme of this figure?

  • How old is the figure?

  • What is the height of the figure?

  • What are some features you know you want on the figure?

You don't need every detail right away, but if you have a basis for your figure than your drawing will look more planned out. You will get more ideas as you draw that you can add. You will see a difference between planned and unplanned drawings. You can also use thumbnails to get some ideas down.

Sketch The Basic Gesture
The first thing you should always do is to draw a basic gesture of the figure. To do this lightly sketch a basic manikin of your figure to get the proportions right before any further details. A basic manikin can consist of an oval for the head, an oval or round square for the ribcage and lines for the arms and legs with a basic circle for the hands and feet. Below is a quick sketch of drawing the basic shapes with a little added detail over.

Cat Drawings Tips

Cat Drawings Tips
A pussy cat is one of the first animals a child learns to draw. The cartoon-like cat images that are popular among children can be drawn pretty easily.

All you have to do is enrol your child in an art school and encourage him/her to take lessons in drawing cats.

However, with the internet pervading our lives, cat drawings can be learnt on line. You can find an appropriate website or software that provides drawing lessons.

These free educational resources help children to improve their drawing skills.

Types of Cat Drawings

Children love to draw cats. For many of them, presence of the animal in the house prompts them to draw pictures of their furry friends. Others find it easy to draw cats. The cats come in different shapes and sizes. There are fat cats, happy cats and angry cats. Regardless of the type of cat your child wants to draw, there are certain steps in cat drawings.

Tips for Drawing Cats

Before proceeding with the drawing lesson, make sure that your child has all the necessary drawing tools. Apart from a pencil and paper, a good eraser, sharpener, coloured pencils, felt tip pens and crayons are needed for producing colourful pictures.

Select a book about drawing cats, many of them are available in your neighbourhood book store or can be purchased on line. An inexpensive way of learning cat drawings would be to visit a website that teaches how to draw cat.

The steps involved in drawing cats vary according to the type of cat your child wants to draw. Beginners usually start with simple cartoon-like images of cats. First, draw the head of the cat, followed by the body, legs and tail. Next, add the eyes, nose, mouth, whiskers and ears and the cat drawing is ready.

Although the aforementioned rule applies to most drawings of cats, there are different variations that can be learnt gradually. A range of expressions can be added to the cat's face by varying the size of the cat's eyes. Interesting images of cats can be created by curving the tail in different ways. According to some art teachers, an animal sketch should start by drawing the basic shape. For cat drawing, the drawing can be started with a triangle as the cat's body and a small circle as head on top of it. With two small triangles mounted on top of the head to form ears, an inverted M as mouth, and small circles as eyes, the cute cat is almost ready to purr.

How to Draw a Moped

How to Draw a Moped
Mopeds are properly known as powered bicycles. They function like low powered bikes. These vehicles are the most economical and one of safest modes of motor transport, owned by many people in the world. The distinguishing feature of a moped is its pedals, which help power up the motorcycle initially. Mopeds might not give great speed, usually 30 kilometers per hour, but since they are very cheap, overall they give great mileage. Mopeds first gained popularity in Europe, spreading to the US by late 1970. With the advent of scooters, mopeds have definitely become the relic of the past. Off late however, its popularity is again gaining momentum, since they do not emit harmful pollutants. A moped, 'Amelie,' released in 2001, is the most popular pick recently.

Required Drawing Tools:
  • a) Pencil
  • b) Paper/ Canvas
  • c) Colors (optional)
  • d) Paint brush (Optional)
Drawing a Moped:
We are covering a moped with its handle to our left.

Wheels:
Always begin with wheels in the case of vehicles. Two big circles should be drawn at some distance to each other. The pedals will be portrayed here. One small circle should be drawn inside each of the larger circles, which represent the hubs of the moped.

Mudguards:
Cover half of each wheel with semi-circular mudguards.

Spokes:
The spikes of the moped resemble that of a cycle or a bike. Draw lines from the hub of the wheel towards the end on each circle to show the spikes on the wheels of the moped.

Tubes or Chassis:
The chassis is represented with the help of long cuboidal shapes. Sketch two vertical cuboids in an inclined arrangement, forming a 'V' a little above the wheels. The joint of this 'V' should be slightly expanded horizontally.

Connecting Rods:
From the two smaller circles, inside each of the wheels, extend out two sets of tilted, double rods. The set emerging from the front wheel needs to be longer than the one at the back wheel.

Pedal:
A small circle is sketched between the two wheels. Give it a two dimensional look and project out a small cube from it horizontally. This shall represent the engine cover. Form a smaller circle next to this structure. The pedals will be portrayed here. On the side facing you, extend out a straight line with a small rectangle at the tip to make up for the pedals.

Stand:
Next to the paddles, form an inverted tumbler to show stand.

Saddle:
Draw a horizontal saddle on the cuboid above the back wheel. The set of inclined rods should fuse at the base of the saddle.

Handlebars:
The set of rods emerging from the front wheels go on to form curved, tumbler shaped handlebars. Stretch out two horizontals, from the mouth of the curve, to the right and left for handles. Two small circles at the tip of handles will form the handle cover. Extend out small tilted lines at 45 degrees from the two handles, representing breaks. Show the brakes emerging from a small rectangular box.

Headlights:
Headlights are drawn across the handlebars by portraying a large circle across the middle of the handlebars.

Exhaust Pipe:
It should be drawn across the back wheel, in the form of an oblong, with one end open.

Finishing:
Shade and thicken up the outlines as per your preferences, for more realistic effects.
